Hi everyone!
Before i start, let me give you a brief introduction about myself for those who do not know me. My name is Shi Chie, currently in my third year studying chemistry.
Being a science student, there are minimal interaction and communication involve in the course i am studying. We usually do not have the opportunity to get ourselves involve in any project work or presentations. Most of the time, we can survive the semester as a independent learner where everyone just mind their own business. Hence, i do not have the chance to brush up my communication skills while i am studying in NUS.
I am a talkative person who likes to mingle around with my friends all the time. It is always easy to talk to my friends as they are the ones who are already used to the way i communicate and understood me. However, everyone start off with being strangers and how i communicate to the other party will definitely plays an important role on establishing what kind of relationship i will have with him or her in the future.
Personally, i think having an effective communication skills are very important. It is a set of soft skills that are very crucial for me to survive in today's society and it is only through communication that one can convey his or her messages, ideas and intentions to one another.
Last semester, i had the opportunity to go to the University of Hong Kong for summer exchange programme. I get to interact and stay with other international students and that was when i realized i need to brush up on my communication skills. Being in Singapore for so long, i am very used to the way we singaporean are communicating. We often use singlish to communicate and we usually speaks very fast. Hence, i have some difficulties in communicating with my international friends back in Hong Kong. I often need to repeat thrice slowly before they get what i am trying to say. Being in a globalized world now, i realized the importance to communicate well not just to my fellow singaporean but also to the people all over the world.
In conclusion, i always believe that communication sets the foundation in how each and every one of us is being connected together hence i hope that this module can help me to improve my communication skills in one way or another.
Hmm. It really is true that science students can usually get past the semester without opening their mouth: compulsory class participation in either discussions, or oral presentations are usually close to nil compared to the other faculties. Business modules are all about presentations, even engineering students have a much more rigorous viva compared to us.
ReplyDeleteFirst impressions, while often misleading, are always lasting. Perhaps it might be better to be honest and true to yourself rather than attempting to project a false facade when interacting with people for the first time. It's quite likely people are more sensitive to non-verbal cues for a first time encounter since they don't know much about you to rely on.
